Statement of the work, achievements, accomplishments and performance
Work: Professor Sunil Pradhan discovered 5 new clinical signs in muscular dystrophies; "Valley sign" in Duchenne, "Poly-hill sign" in facioscapulohumeral, "Shank sign" in myotonic dystrophy, "Calf-head sign" in Miyoshi Myopathy and "Diamond on quadriceps sign" in dysferlinopathy. He described a new lipid extraction method for NMR studies on human muscle tissue. He invented an electrophysiological technique to study the intercostal nerves. He classified acute transverse myelitis and described a new disease sub-entity "Parainfectious conus myelitis" that presents with acute urinary retention and with no conventional signs of myelitis. Using self-designed experiments, he described new mechanisms of electrophysiological F-response generation and discovered a new phenomenon of multiple F-response seen in lower motor neuron disorders particularly poliomyelitis. In neurocysticercosis related epilepsy, he demonstrated that the patients who develop perilesional gliosis have poor seizure outcome and persistence of minor ictal symptoms. Based on rare patients with Japanese-encephalitis, he proved a long proposed hypothesis that viruses might produce parkinsonism due to isolated lesions in the substantia nigra. He also described a new Indian variant of central demyelinating disease close to but distinct from multiple sclerosis. His other novel reportings include tickling seizures, micturition induced reflex epilepsy, central pontine myelinolysis after slow correction of hyponatremia, diagnostic MRI features of Hirayama-type monomelic amyotrophy, sheathing of retinal vessels in tuberous sclerosis and clinico-imagiological features of endosulfan poisoning. He is currently involved in in-vitro NMR studies on blood and muscle homogenates to look for different lipid soluble and water soluble metabolites which may be of diagnostic significance. His other current interest is in epidemiology of Dementia in India and to look for any regional variation in the proportions of different polymorphic genes attributed to have association with Dementia.
Achievements: Pradhan received Dr. Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Prize of Medicine (CSIR) in the year 2002 for his overall clinical research in the field of Neurology, which is a rare achievement for a clinician. He received Dr. H. B. Dingley memorial ICMR award for his work on muscular dystrophies and again Shakuntala Amirchand ICMR award for his work on clinical neurophysiology. He is also the recipient of Vigyan Ratna award of U. P. Council of Science & Technology and Rajib Goyal Award of Kurukshetra University.
