Tents, tarpaulins, awnings and canopies are all variations of each other, the essential function being to provide protection to people and other objects (i.e. autos) from rain and other elements. Beyond that, however, the functions differ. Tents are shelters, usually associated with camping; tarpaulins (tarps) are multi-functioning flat sheets of waterproof material that can serve as a basic shelter or as an accessory to tents; awnings are placed on the outside of many structures to provide protection from rain and sun; and canopies are usually free-standing shelters, often used at outdoor parties or other events.

The most commonly used materials in the production of tents is nylon, which is popular because of the water-resistance and durability the fabric provide; although because nylon is only water-resistant, not waterproof, which means that some type of waterproofer (spray, wax) should be used. Tarps are flat pieces of material, traditionally canvas but more and more are being fabricated from manmade materials such as polyethylene. Tarps are almost always waterproof and have a number of uses.

Awnings always attach directly to the structure, either over doors or windows and come in many sizes, shapes and materials. Industrial awnings are most often made of metal while residential awnings can be cloth or metal. Most types of awnings are retractable, as well. Canopies are free standing cloth or metal structure often used for outdoor events or at resorts and the like. Because tents, tarpaulins, awnings and canopies are specifically suited for different applications; research to be sure you get the right type for your needs.
