The term “sheet metal” refers to any piece of thin metal that can be bent and shaped into many, many items; automobiles and skyscrapers are both examples of applications for this type of material. The metal itself can be almost any type, but probably the two most commonly used are steel and aluminium. The most common turned items in construction are screws; without them, almost none of our modern day structures would be possible. Sheet metal components and turned components make up many of our modern day structures.

Sheet metal, as stated previously, is usually produced using steel or aluminium, but other metals can also be used for more specific applications. Silver and copper are often used for decorative purposes, while metals such as titanium and platinum are more often used in technological and industrial applications (i.e. computers and airplanes).

The most basic turned metal component is a screw, which most people have heard of; but, did you know that screws come in a plethora of sizes ranging from a few centimetres to a metre or more. There are at least eleven different types of screws, used for holding together nearly every material from wood to metal and everything in between (except maybe textiles).

Without sheet metal components and turned components, many of our modern day processes would be impossible. Construction, automobiles, and many other of our modern processes would be nearly impossible; knowing about the different types of these products can help you find just the right one for your project.
