USER GUIDE
Transformer, voltage stabilisers, CVT’s and UPS are all types of electrical equipment used for residential, commercial and industrial power. As most of us are not certified electricians, the chances that we know anything about these devices are probably pretty slim; this article hopes to address that by defining these terms, and giving examples of their usage.
A transformer is defined as “a device used to transfer electric energy from one circuit to another.” The other purpose of this device is to change high voltage power into low in order for that power to be used in homes and businesses. Transformers are the “boxes” at the top of most utility and phone poles. CVT’s (constant voltage transformers) are a specialised type of transformer; they are portable, and often used to stabilise electricity going to highly specialised medical, technical and intelligence equipment.
Most electrical equipment runs best when the voltage supply is a steady level, with no fluctuations; as a matter of fact, for some electronics, changes in levels of voltage could be very damaging. Unfortunately, electricity does have fluctuations, so a device called a voltage stabiliser is employed to limit the effects of those surges in power. A UPS is an uninterrupted power supply, more commonly known as “battery back-up”; this device works in the event that the power supply is uninterrupted. A voltage stabiliser requires electricity to work, but a UPS does not.
Hopefully, this article has at least given you a basic understanding of some of these electrical devices that are used to power our world.
