Batteries, cells and other charge storage devices allow us to lead a mobile life without being inconvenienced by a lack of portable electronic devices (i.e. cell phones, computers, etc.). There are many, many types of batteries available; dry cell, wet cell, cell phone, car and lithium to name a few. Since 1905, when Eveready built a factory in India, these types of products have been a staple of the Indian exports market. Here are some of the most common battery types and other related items that are exported from India.

Probably the most common battery is a dry cell; the one most people picture when thinking about the subject. Dry cells come in several sizes (AAA, AA, A, etc.), are cylindrical or square in shape, and, depending on the usage, run out of energy relatively quickly. These batteries are constructed of a combination of potassium hydroxide, zinc and other energy generating materials, and when dried and placed in the battery, are called a cathode and hold a positive charge. The anode, which is mostly zinc, is injected into the cathode. Once this is finished, all of the ingredients are sealed in a cardboard tube, metal caps are placed on the ends, and the battery is complete.

India is a major exporter of batteries, cells and other charge storage devices, and will, most likely, continue to be for many years. As environmental concerns about the pollution caused by batteries continue to grow, India has the opportunity to lead the world in new, “green” sources of alternative battery materials.
