USER GUIDE
Xenon bulbs, halogen bulbs, florescent bulbs and tubes have some similarities, namely, they all create light by exciting atoms which causes them to release photons, the source of the light. Beyond that, there are not many similarities. Here is a brief description of the first two types of bulbs, the processes by which they create light, and some of their advantages and disadvantages.
Xenon bulbs are the latest in lighting technology; they are currently being used as headlights in many “high-end” vehicles. Unlike “traditional” light bulbs, this type of lighting uses gas rather than a filament to cause the charge that makes the light work. These bulbs do not get hot to the touch, emit a brighter light, and last for much longer than other types. Disadvantages are; cost, due to the newness of this technology, and the fact that you cannot simply replace halogen headlights with xenon as they require a different set-up.
Halogen bulbs are most often used for headlights in automobiles. These lights remain popular because of their low cost and relatively long life. Similar to “normal” light bulbs, halogen lights rely on a tungsten filament to cause light. The filament is encased in a quartz (rather than glass) envelope; as the tungsten heats, the heat combines with halogen (rather than argon) in order to produce light. These bulbs, though more efficient than the incandescent variety, still produce heat, which, for lights anyway, is wasted energy.
Xenon bulbs, halogen bulbs, florescent bulbs and tubes have different applications. Each consumer is responsible for determining which type suits their particular purpose.
