The industrialisation and modernisation our country has gone through over the last twenty or so years have touched every aspect of Indian culture. The sportswear and accessories industry is one segment of that has experienced a tremendous growth in popularity. In fact, many sources say that the market will increase by 45% over the next two years. Here is a look at some of the reasons for this exponential growth.

The main reason for the large growth in not only this sector, but in many others as well, is the growth in disposable income due to the rapid industrialisation of Indian cities; there is a middle class in India like never before. One industry that has responded to this growing middle class is the movie industry; several “Bollywood” movies have received international recognition. The growth of the film and sportswear industries can be linked; just as people have more to spend on entertainment; they have more to spend on so-called “modern” clothing as well. Movies are also a way that the population has been exposed to the most current fashions.

Another contributor to the growth of the sportswear and accessories industry has been the decision by the Indian government to make tourism a priority; the influx of foreign visitors has encouraged the clothing producers of India to remain current in order to serve the needs of tourists.
