Water purification has come a long way in Kerala over the last two decades but so has the challenges that it involves. The concept of home water purifiers grew popular in Kerala during the late 90?s with the introduction of generic wall mounted water purifiers that processed small quantities of water. However, the unique topographic and climatic conditions of a region like Kerala pose a distinctive set of problems and obstacles when it comes to water purification. As reported in a study conducted by BSD Water Purification, a company based in Ernakulam, indicated, challenges faced in water purification vary greatly based on water sources. Municipal water supplied throughout Ernakulam comes from the Periyar River; however most houses, colleges, and other public establishments supplement their supply of potable water through ground water resources, the suitability of which can vary from locality to locality. BSD is the parent company of Aquaneeta, the highly successful water purification solutions provider that has been employed by scores of leading colleges, schools, hospitals, religious establishments, hotels, builders and other private and public sector industrial ventures in addition to lacs of home owners all over Kerala.
BSD Water Purification Experts (P) Ltd., markets its range of home water purifiers through Aquaneeta. The wide variety of Aquaneeta water purifiers available for purchase provide for refinement for various types of impurities in water. In Ernakulam District, tap water quality is mostly consistent because its source is the Periyar river, however quality of ground water resources vary heavily. The shallow coastal aquifers along the Arabian Sea infuse in ground water a high level of salinity and raises TDS (total dissolved solids) levels in the water, these levels rose significantly after the tsunami in 2006. Further inland, towards the east of the district, ground water quality falls within drinkable levels. When selecting a water purifier in Ernakulam, it is wise to examine the quality of your water sources. In general, RO (Reverse osmosis) based water purifiers are used to separate dissolved solids while UV (ultraviolet) filtration is useful for neutralisation of virus and other organic microbes present in water. If levels of TDS are low, especially below the 300ppm mark, a UV filter is more than sufficient. An accurate measurement of TDS levels can be obtained using a TDS meter. The upper limit for TDS in drinking water, as specified by the Bureau of Indian standards is 500ppm, above this level, it is necessary to purchase an RO filter.
